Madhavi Swarup (1964, Padrauna – Uttar Pradesh, India)
Madhavi Swarup is a Delhi based photographer. Her subjects vary from the everlasting beauty of nature, or the sheer joy of a child embracing the mother to the magnificent and majestic old monuments.
She grew up in an environment where music, literature, dance, and a traditional way of life, imbued her with a strong sense of cultural belonging. It is this inner strength that propelled Madhavi to shoot images which engaged her to her environment with a sensual expression. As a result, she does not stress on the construct of photography as history, or memory. In the photographs, the attention is on their graphic quality.
Madhavi's pictures demonstrate beautiful textures, forms and play of light and shade, space and time, and that of representation, capturing just the right mood in her unusual panoramic angles, producing images that caress the eye. She loves the medium of black and white. The rich black and the pristine white invigorate Madhavi with a whole gamut of compositions to bring alive and celebrate.
She is also a sought-after travel photographer, and has contributed work to publications such as Elle Decor, Inside Outside, Hindustan Times, Jetwings, Travel Plus and many more prestigious publications.
She has had many solo exhibitions and group shows in India and abroad. She has won a number of prestigious awards, among which is the 1st Prize from the National Wildlife Authority of India (2006). Her photographs have been included in public and private collections in India and abroad. Madhavi had her formal training in photography from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in New Delhi, Light and Life Academy in Ooty.
