William Chang (1981, New Delhi)
Of Chinese ethnicity and Indian culture, William Chang has been exposed to a multitude of aesthetic influences that have fostered in him a unique artistic talent. His photographs are suffused with an almost Zen-like stillness. Steam engine, sewing machine or garden tool, William’s camera turns them into objects of visual poetry. This is all the more remarkable since all those items are found objects - things just lying around in the crowded cities of India.
William may be a big city dweller, but he has the eye of a nostalgic dreamer. On his long walks he looks for the timeless, the everlasting. Metal is a dominant theme in his work, a fact that has also surprised William, since he doesn’t consciously focus on this material as a photographic theme. He seeks the explanation for this intuitive predilection in his life-long passion for doing things with his own hands, be it building structures with Lego bricks or simply fixing things.
William is a graduate from the Light & Life Academy in Ooty, India, with a specialization in Fine Art and Nature photography. His photographs have appeared in various magazines and publications.
William lives and works in Delhi, India.
