Sandeep Biswas (New Delhi, India - 1971)
Sandeep Biswas graduated from Delhi College of Art in 1993, after which he took a job with an advertising agency. It took him just 2 years to realize that what he really wanted to do was to be a photographer, building on the love he had developed for this medium in his school days. Since then, Sandeep has developed a unique and highly sensitive style, for which he has steadily gained recognition – in India and abroad. He divides his time between professional assignments as a freelance photographer and exploring his talents as a fine arts master.
AIFACS spotted his talent early, with awards in 1997 and 1999. In 2001 the Japan Foundation sponsored a two-man show of Sandeep jointly with a Japanese photographer, following which he was awarded the Japan Foundation Fellowship which included an appointment as Associate Fellow for 6 months at the photography department of Kyoto University of Art and Design. In 2005 he was awarded the Visual Art Gallery, India Habitat Center Fellowship for photography.
Sandeep has had 3 solo shows. 2 of which have in in New Delhi(Academy of Fine Art & Literature, April 2003, supported by the Japan Foundation and Gallery VIART in September 2005) & his last solo show was at gallery Nairang, Lahore, Pakistan in November 2006. He has also been a part of over 25 group shows in India,Sri Lanka, France & German.
He has served as external Jury/Examiner of photography at the Pearl Academy of Fashion in New Delhi and has taught as visiting faculty at a number of institutes, such as the renowned National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in New Delhi.
In April 2007 Sandeep curated a well-received exhibition of 9 photographers (Vision Beyond) for Gallery Art Indus. His works have been a part of Fotoseptiembreusa-Safoto 2007, San Antonio, Texas, USA and Art Singapore (Gallery Enigma Art) 2007. He also curated a photography show "a long road home" in July 2007.
Sandeep lives and works in Delhi.
