Sandesh Bhandare (Pune, India, 1963)


After obtaining a GD Art, 1985, Sandesh worked with Sakal as a photo journalist and then as freelance photographer with dailies and magazines like The Hindustan Times, India Today, Outlook etc besides being a visiting lecturer on photography at MIER’s MIT Institute of Design.

Sandesh has exhibited in various solo and group shows, like, Alliance Francaise, Delhi, 1995, AIFACS, Delhi, 1995 and Click, Vadehra Art Gallery, 2008. His seminal works included the researched based ‘Pune Brahmins’ and ‘Devali’, both of which were exhibited at the National Centre of Performing Arts, Mumbai. They were later published in book form. He has also won numerous awards, for instance, AIFACS, Delhi 1995, Alliance Francaise young artist award, 1994 and 1991, SAARC festival 1992.

His interest in the ‘local’ has led him to take up projects like “Akhada”, which focus on the art of wrestling, and “Tamasha”, a popular local performing art in Maharashtra, which was supported by India Foundation for the Arts and Sir Ratan Tata Trust, and was published in a book. He is currently working on “Unglobalised Maharashtra”, and “Life of Dharavi, Mumbai”.

Sandesh is currently living in Pune
